What is CDE?

CDE, known nationally as Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM), combines data from multiple sources to estimate the number of 8-year old children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or mental retardation who live in the counties of Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Orange, Randolph, Rockingham, and Wake. This study cross-references multiple agencies that evaluate and serve children with autism in order to comprehensively identify cases and to avoid double-counting cases seen by multiple agencies. We work under formal agreements with the following agencies to collect this data:
· North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
· North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
· Division TEACCH at UNC-Chapel Hill

Eleven states currently participate in the ADDM network: Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.

What is ‘child development’?

Child development describes stages of physical, social, and psychological growth that occur from birth through young adulthood. A child’s growth and development are affected in part by the environment. Parents and health professionals work together towards the goal of having each child reach his or her full potential.
