SEED Clinic Visit

How do I get ready for clinic visits?

If this visit includes your child’s developmental assessment and/or additional parent interviews:

  • Plan your visit for morning hours. Young children are usually more alert and potentially more cooperative early in the day.
  • If your parent interview and your child's assessment will occur at the same time, plan to have 2 adults bring the child (1 to be interviewed and 1 to be with the child).
  • We are unable to provide childcare for additional children. We ask that you do not bring any of your other children to the visit unless you also bring another adult to care for them.
  • Bring 1 or 2 of your child’s favorite toys, books, or comfort items just in case your child gets tired or fussy.
  • Bring at least 2 of your child’s favorite snack items (pretzels, crackers, cookies, raisins, etc) that the clinicians can use with your child during the assessment.
  • Bring the directions to the study assessment center, the Center for Development and Learning.
  • Bring any questionnaires or forms you have completed for the study but have not yet mailed to us.
  • Prepare your child for what to expect at the visit. Tell him or her that they will play some games, talk to some people, and have a short check-up like at the doctor’s. You can also read the story we will send you describing your child's clinic visit.
  • Although we have scheduled each of your appointments to last a specific period of time, we know that sometimes things may not go as planned. If this happens, we will schedule additional appointments with you.
  • Be aware that you might need to drive to the hospital parking deck to get blood drawn. One of our study staff will show you the way and stay with you during the blood draw.
Please note: if you will have a long assessment visit, feel free to bring your lunch. If you get hungry or need to take a lunch break, there are fast food restaurants and cafés nearby.
